Celebrities are the larger-than-life figures of the modern age. Fans follow them obsessively, both on- and off-screen (or stage or playing field). They get emotionally invested in the celebrities’ personal lives and often feel the depth of their loss when they pass away. Celebrity romances are something that affect fans in a number of ways – including jealousy of a celebrity’s new partner and happiness that things are going well for a favorite popular figure. One of the most gut-wrenching types of the celebrity romance are the ones that end in tragedy.
Princess Diana and Dodi Fayeed
Diana, Princess of Wales started life as a public figure in a rather romantic way – by marrying Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, she became royalty. Her charitable acts and the way she raised her two sons made her a media darling, and she became even more sympathetic when she and Charles divorced and it became clear how demanding life in the British royal family had become for Diana. When she died at age 36 in 1997, she had just started breaking away from the pressures of royal life and was dating billionaire Dodi Fayeed. Diana and Dodi died together in a car crash when their driver was trying to evade the incessant paparazzi on their tail.
Lea Michele and Cory Monteith
Lea Michele and Cory Monteith stole the show as they sung their way into audiences’ hearts on the hit TV show Glee. The on-again/off-again relationship between their characters Rachel and Finn was so intriguing to watch on the small screen that many people cheered the idea of the two actors portraying these characters hooking up in real life. Cory’s death at age 31 in 2013 from a drug overdose came on the heels of news he was in recovery and attempting to sober up. His real-life death affected his character’s fate, making it so that Rachel and Finn never were able to have that marriage that was canceled multiple times – and that Rachel was in mourning over Finn, just as Lea was over Cory.
Petra Nemcova and Simon Atlee
Petra Nemcova and Simon Atlee’s relationship seemed to be the stuff of dreams. The Sports Illustrated model and her photographer boyfriend were vacationing in Thailand in 1994, enjoying a scenic bungalow, when a tsunami hit the area, separating the two lovebirds. Petra, then 25, suffered from internal injuries and a broken pelvis. Her 33-year-old boyfriend was missing, presumed dead, for a number of months until his body was located a few miles away.
Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love
One of the most famous musicians of the 90s, Kurt Cobain gained a level of fame he never sought when his band, Nirvana, took off. His discomfort with the media obsession with his personal life, particularly his rocky relationship with musician and eccentric visual artist Courtney Love, may have led to his suicide in 1994 at age 27. The couple appeared madly in love, although their fights were often public and fueled by drugs. Some even speculate Kurt’s crash and burn life was only accelerated by his torrid relationship with his wife.
Brittany Murphy and Simon Monjack
Brittany Murphy made her mark as a popular actress in the 90s. She didn’t often land the lead roles, but her bubbly personality and unforgettable talent made her stand the test of time. She married screenwriter Simon Monjack in 2007 in a quiet ceremony. Not too long after their marriage was made public in 2009, Brittany died at age 32 of what was proclaimed to be pneumonia and an accidental drug overdose. Strangely, her husband died less than six months later of heart failure. Parents of both suspect something more to the timing of their deaths. Simon’s mother suspected toxic mold poisoning from the couple’s home, whereas Brittany’s dad thinks the two might have been murdered, since evidence of heavy metal poisoning was found in toxicology reports for them both.
Whether the relationship ends in divorce or a breakup or the two are parted by death or some other illness or injury, a tragic celebrity romance moves the hearts of many fans and helps make the celebrity (or celebrities) involved into the figures of legend. If you’re looking for a good cry, thinking about tragic romances might just be what you need – as long as you cheer yourself up afterward by reading up on celebrity fairy tale-like stories that end up in happily ever after.
